Cities brace for large crowds at anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ demonstrations across the US

Cities across the United States are preparing for potentially massive turnouts this weekend as thousands are expected to gather for nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations—anti-Trump rallies aimed at denouncing what organizers describe as rising authoritarianism and threats to democratic norms.

The protests, taking place in major metropolitan centers including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington D.C., are being billed as a direct rebuke of President Donald Trump’s return to the political spotlight and his ongoing influence over the Republican Party.

Organized by a coalition of progressive groups, civil rights organizations, and grassroots activists, the “No Kings” movement is framed as a defense of democratic institutions and the constitutional balance of power.

The slogan is a reference to the Founders’ original rejection of monarchy and perceived efforts by Trump and his allies to concentrate executive power.

“This is not about party politics,” said event organizer Eliza Torres of Liberty Action Now. “It’s about rejecting the idea that one man can place himself above the law or turn the presidency into a throne.”

Officials in several cities have increased police presence and closed off streets in anticipation of large crowds.

In Washington D.C., security fencing has been erected near the Capitol, and the National Park Service has issued permits for what it expects to be one of the largest gatherings on the National Mall since the 2021 inauguration protests.

Local law enforcement agencies have also issued public safety advisories, noting that while the majority of demonstrators are expected to protest peacefully, counter-protests by pro-Trump groups could raise tensions.

In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams urged participants to remain peaceful and respectful of law enforcement. “New York will always protect the right to protest,” he said at a Friday press conference. “But we will not tolerate violence or destruction.”

The demonstrations are also being fueled by renewed concerns over Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, legal troubles, and recent suggestions from some of his supporters that a second term would be used to “clean house” in the federal government, potentially targeting political opponents and civil servants.

Trump has dismissed the protests as “radical left nonsense” in a post on Truth Social, adding, “The people know the truth. We don’t bow to kings—we stand for freedom.”

“This isn’t just about Donald Trump anymore,” said Dr. Rachel Lin, a political science professor at Georgetown University. “It’s about a broader fear that democratic norms are eroding, and these rallies are an attempt to draw a line in the sand.”
